ARTICLE
PHENOMENAL LEADERS

Recently I was watching an interview with an amazing young woman that inspired me with her vision, vibrancy and aliveness. Sabriye was born in Germany , and at the age of 12, a degenerative eye disease took away her sight. As a girl she was embarrassed by her blindness. "When I became blind, I didn't want to let other people notice … that I was different," Sabriye remembers.

Eventually, Sabriye went to a school for the blind and learned self-reliance. She went on to college where she studied the complex language of Tibet . At the time, Tibetan had never been translated into braille—but that didn't stop Sabriye. She created her own Tibetan-German/German-Tibetan braille dictionary, the first of its kind. Her past struggles with blindness sparked an idea to establish the first school for the blind in Tibet in order to give blind children confidence and freedom from shame—a grim challenge in a place with a deep prejudice against the blind. She successfully set up the school and as part of the process rode on horseback to villages and families to encourage them to let their children attend the school. What an amazing woman!

What inspired me about this woman is her ability to be unreasonable in what she wanted to do in her life. This woman is an example of true leadership and leading from within, despite the perceived obstacles and challenges set before her. In fact when she was asked about challenges she said that it was good to be blind because then you don't see the obstacles.

This has inspired me to bring out the 6 qualities phenomenal leaders tend to have in common:

BEING VISIONARY.

They can see the possibility of something beyond what everybody else sees. They have a strong vision of what they would like to create and they just go for it. Sharing their vision and not getting stopped by those who don't hold the same vision.

BEING INTUITIVE.

They have a strong intuitive sense, which they listen to and follow at all times. They use this sense like any other to receive messages about what next steps to take, decisions to be made, people to talk to, phone calls to make, and any important actions to take in any given moment.

BEING COMMITTED.

They have a commitment and determination to follow through on what they want to achieve. Knowing that once they commit to a vision, goal or intention that it will be realised.

BEING SUPPORTIVE.

They ask for and give support to those that share their vision. They know who to ask and are unreasonable in asking for what they want. They also have the skill of enrolling others in their vision.

BEING ALIVE.

They have a sense of aliveness about them, an openness and interest in living life to the full. A wonder and fascination about life, much like a child, never anticipating what the next moment will hold instead filled with wonder at what will present itself in life. Also they don't fear what will happen, having an inner knowing that they can deal with anything that comes along in this journey of life.

BEING UNREASONABLE.

They have the ability to be unreasonable. When others say that they can't do something phenomenal leaders will say they can and find some way to make it happen. They see obstacles as something to overcome rather than something that limits them or stops them from achieving their vision.

Phenomenal leaders have a sense of energy, aliveness and power around them, that attracts others to them. They are here to make a difference, there is a deeper and broader purpose, something that is beyond there own personal interest, something that is transpersonal. A great example of this is Neale Donald Walsh who wrote the ‘Conversation with Gods' series of books. He wrote in a recent article ‘I intend for my life to change the world entire, and I don't say that arrogantly in any way. I say it with great determination and great conviction. I intend for that to occur'.
